Sörskogen - Mordet I Grottan

This is the side project I was talking about in my intro. It’s very prog and very not metal, but it’s still awesome. Mikael singing in Swedish.

I have turned to the dark side and Mikael Akerfeldt is my master [17 Oct 2005|10:12pm]

been here for awhile, decided to say hi.

Name: Wren

Age: 20

When did you first hear the gospel of Opeth: 2 years ago, my friend’s mother gave me Deliverance as a graduation present (I kid you not)

How have Mikael’s sermons affected your life: Well without being introduced to Mikael, my love of metal would not have happened.

Which of His sermons are you favorite: In Mist She Is Standing, The Night And The Silent Water, Black Rose Immortal, When, The Amen Corner, Benighted, Moonlapse Vertigo, Blackwater Park, Still Day Beneath The Sun, Deliverance, By The Pain I See In Others, Windowpane, In My Time Of Need, The Baying Of The Hounds, Isolation Years, live version of Closure

Have you witnessed any sermons live, and if so, how many times: 1, going on 2

How will you spread the word of Mikael throughout the land: Already I have gotten my roommate into them, as well as some family friends.

What do you think of his sermons in other churches(Bloodbath, Steel, Katatonia, etc): Bloodbath is frickin awesome. I want Steel very badly, but I have this random cover of a Fleetwood Mac song (which is awesome). Katatonia, only have one song which I love. I also have Sörskogen, a progressive rock project that Mikael did with Dan Swano. The first thought I had when I heard the song was “this is hot!”

Well, I had to be more original with the subject. Anyway, I'm new and stuff.

Name: Riryoku

Age: 14

When did you first hear the gospel of Opeth: Ultimate-Guitar.com, where I heard about all the other good bands.

How have Mikael's sermons affected your life: He utterly changed my musical direction.

Which of His sermons are you favorite: The Drapery Falls, Wreath, Deliverance, Master's Appretnices, Dirge For November, all them good 'uns.

Have you witnessed any sermons live, and if so, how many times: unfortunately, no. :(

How will you spread the word of Mikael throughout the land: By opening my holy and blessed piehole upon the world, of course.

What do you think of his sermons in other churches(Bloodbath, Steel, Katatonia, etc): His worth with Bloodbath is awesome. No comment on steel, Katatonia...well...that was OK.

If my ticket seriously ends up saying "OPETH / NEVEMORE" on it, I'm going to fucking laminate it, throw it in a plaque, and create a shrine on an altar for it.

I can't believe this...
5 years ago, Opeth opened for Nevermore. Now, the tables are turned. Either way, this is the best news I've heard in months.

update on Lopez's supposed firing [29 Jul 2005|10:53pm]
lady_novembre
Apparently the band posted a bulletin on their MySpace with an update on the issue:

Martin Lopez has not been fired, but rather, went back to Sweden for treatment of a rare blood disorder he's had for most of his life. Until he returns, the band — currently on the Sounds of the Underground tour — has enlisted STRAPPING YOUNG LAD drummer Gene Hoglan...

I didn't see the post myself but someone in my Opeth community over at GJ posted about it.

And the band's site didn't update about it so I don't know...

Hello everyone.

With all the talk and rumors and hyping up of the band lately, I figured I'd share my thoughts. At first glance I thought that it was boarderline sick how Roadrunner is promoting Opeth like theyre something new and fantastic. Fantastic they are, new they are not, and I thought "wow, they're going to attract this whole new fanbase of kids who are so totally not true", then I realized... fans are fans and record sales are record sales. The true fans of Opeth will stay, and also, the spread of Opeth to the masses could potentially enlighten your average generic bad-music-listener to the fantastic world of Swedish, progressive, death metal, (aka good music). Hopefully in all, Ghost Reveries will sell very well worldwide, they will tour all over, and they will roll in their mountains of money. Good for Opeth. I love them. That's all for now guys! Feel free to share your feelings! This is a safe place where people won't yell at you for speaking your mind and having an opinion (cough ultimate metal cough). Have a great day!

I have accepted Mikael Åkerfeldt as my Lord and Saviour [14 Jul 2005|10:47pm]
lady_novembre
Name: Monica

Age: 18

When did you first hear the gospel of Opeth: I heard "Dirge for November" on the Music Choice Metal channel about 3 years ago, and I haven't turned back since.

How have Mikael's sermons affected your life: Somewhere within the first 6 months of listening to the band, I acquired a type of philosophy about life that I can't explain. Mikael himself, however, has had the greatest influence on me through his guitar playing and lyrics (since I play guitar and write poetry but nothing I ever write seems to come out Opeth-esque, in both mediums). And although the "Novembre" in my username mainly is connected to the band Novembre, it is also derived from "Dirge For November".

Which of His sermons are your favorite: I believe that one song shouldn't be any better quality than another, because all of Opeth's songs are masterpieces. There are some that are more so than others, however, such as "In The Mist She Was Standing", "Black Rose Immortal", "To Bid You Farewell", "Demon of the Fall", "Benighted", "Face of Melinda", "Harvest", "The Drapery Falls", "Dirge For November", "Deliverance", and "A Fair Judgement". Something about them just grasps me harder. I would list some from Damnation as well but I can't chose just one or two that would justify the whole album. I could list [plenty] more but those are the ones that really stand out for me. I adore Damnation but lately I've finally been gaining respect for the band's earlier sound, especially the style of Mikael's vocals. But I can't wait to hear what'll be on Ghost Reveries!

Have you witnessed any sermons live, and if so, how many times: None. I want to go the Sounds of Underground concert but I probably won't be able to go, which depresses me more than anything. I'll go to one of their concerts one day though. I must!

How will you spread the word of Mikael throughout the land: I have an "O" Opeth necklace that I wear daily. I never take it off, actually. I don't know whether that's dedication or just plan stupidity. I get a lot of questions about it and I'm always more than happy to explain to whoever's asking what the symbol means. I try and get my friends into the band and others who are always looking for new music to listen to because their current collection bores them. I doubt Opeth will ever be boring for me. Every time I listen to an earlier album, especially Orchid, I fall in love with the band all over again. I plan to get a tattoo of the "O" on my back eventually (like so). I had a Henna of it done recently in the exact place where I wanted it done permanently, and I couldn't stop staring at it in the mirror. I wished it was real. I'll get it done eventually. I have to. There's no doubt in my mind that when I get it done, I'll have some people asking about that well, probably with more intrigue than the necklace, as it would be permanent. Also, I've created an Opeth community over at GreatestJournal. And if I ever have kids, I want to name my first kid Mikael (if it's a boy, obviously). I think that's plenty of word-spreading!

What do you think of his sermons in other churches (Bloodbath, Steel, Katatonia, etc): I love Bloodbath. I can understand Mikael leaving to focus more on Opeth (that's what his reasoning was from what I heard/remember). Dan does a good job with the band but I don't think it's the same. I heard of Steel but I never bothered to try and get anything by them. I'm sure it was awesome, though. And I actually got into Katatonia because I heard that Mikael was on Brave Murder Day. Normally when a vocalist from one of my favorite bands does something like that with another band, I normally don't like the band they're guesting in but with Katatonia, I was hooked ever since I heard "Dispossession". Then I started getting all their older CDs. They're awesome but not as awesome as Opeth!

[ mood | really excited about this com. ]

Age: 16

When did you first hear the gospel of Opeth: A friend put Demon of the Fall on a mix CD for me about four years ago and I would play it over and over forgetting the rest of the CD. I didn't ever really listen to a lot of metal back then but the obvious influences from other forms of excellent music just drew me in. It wasn't long until I bought their CD's and just fell in love.

How have Mikael's sermons affected your life: Opeth was like a gateway drug. It introduced me into beautiful technical music. I had no idea that there was more brilliance out there. Opeth continues to be one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite. Scratch that, they are my favorite band. I just can't love anyone more than I love Mikael. He's brilliant, I love his contributions to everything; Opeth and otherwise.

Which of His sermons are you favorite: Demon of the Fall (because it was my first), Serenity Painted Death, In the Mist She Was Standing, April Ethereal, Harvest, Black Rose Immortal, The Amen Corner (hell, everything on My Arms, Your Hearse), The Moor, The Drapery Falls, Wreath, Ending Credits

Have you witnessed any sermons live, and if so, how many times: Once, the Lamentations tour. It was very good.

How will you spread the word of Mikael throughout the land: I have told and will continue to tell everyone I know about Mikael and Opeth. I've told and will continue to tell those that are not "into" his normal work about his work on The Human Equation and Katatonia etc. I will continue to begin conversations with "Have you heard of Opeth?"

What do you think of his sermons in other churches(Bloodbath, Steel, Katatonia, etc): Mikael can do no wrong, I admire the work he brings to everything, even if it isn't as beautiful as his work with Opeth. I really like looking into his other compositions and collaborations and while I don't always love everything he does, I always find what he does incredibly creative and interesting in some way.

Name: Aiden.

Age: 21.

When did you first hear the gospel of Opeth: About 3 years ago, when someone sent me To Bid You Farewell, and I'd never heard anything so moving in my entrie life.

How have Mikael's sermons affected your life: They've opened the door for many more accomplished metal musicians [erm... "churches"] by which to better myself.

Which of His sermons are you favorite: Wreath, Karma, Godhead's Lament, The Funeral Portrait, By The Pain I See In Others, Windowpane.

Have you witnessed any sermons live, and if so, how many times: Merely once, but it was magical. He threatened us with Lynyrd Skynyrd covers if he didn't see a bigger pit. \m/

How will you spread the word of Mikael throughout the land: I am constantly showing others the majesty of Opeth's music.

What do you think of his sermons in other churches(Bloodbath, Steel, Katatonia, etc): Bloodbath, Steel, Ayreon, Edge Of Sanity; all note-worthy accomplishments.

Age: 20

When did you first hear the gospel of Opeth: A few years ago. I randomly purchased Blackwater Park after hearing an obscene amount of praise for it

How have Mikael's sermons affected your life: Mikael's sermons are my life now. I am a better person for loving Opeth

Which of His sermons are you favorite: The Leper Affinity, Weakness, Still Day Beneath the Sun, Karma, Moonlapse Vertigo, Into the Frost of Winter, basically everything they've ever recorded.

Have you witnessed any sermons live, and if so, how many times: I have witnessed one sermon, recently at the Sounds of the Underground Tour.

How will you spread the word of Mikael throughout the land: I will make sure that no man, woman, or child is deprived of the brilliance of His word.

What do you think of his sermons in other churches(Bloodbath, Steel, Katatonia, etc): His work in Bloodbath was amazing. If only they'd gotten a new drummer on RTC, it would be perfect. Katatonia, I've heard their music, but not the album with Mikael. Not yet, anyway. Edge of Sanity wins massively. And I am convinced that Steel is the best fucking power metal band of all time.
